Finding Color In My Own Backyard

While my trip to the Smokies was a bit after the peak of the leaf fall, I decided to give the local area a try and see if I could find a few more candidates for learning my new favorite HDR program, Nik HDR efex.  The Yorktown Battlefield Park has some nice roads through what I hoped would be some nice fall foliage.  So, with top down my favorite traveling partner and I decided to take an afternoon drive to Yorktown.  I wasn’t disappointed.  Here are a couple of shots from the afternoon’s foray.  The first is a set of canons, freshly painted that stood out among the golden foliage.

Exposure:  Tripod mounted Canon 5D Mk2 using an EF 17-40 mm f/4L at 24mm f/11 at ISO 200.  5 exposures processed with Nik HDR efex.

There were many outstanding examples of foliage, but this one, combined with the angle of the low afternoon sun was hard to pass up.  I spent about 30 minutes taking different exposures at various angles and focal lengths.  This one captures the majesty of this last fall “fling” from a proud sentinel.

Exposure:  Tripod mounted Canon 5D Mk2 using an EF 17-40 mm f/4L at 25mm f/16 at ISO 200.  3 exposures processed with Nik HDR efex.

The afternoon yielded quite a few fall foliage opportunities.  Stay tuned for more to come and follow me on twitter at @dalewardphoto and be sure to check out the web site, too.  www.dalewardphotography.com.
