Over the holidays, I was privileged to photograph a marvelous event honoring one 15 year old young woman. The “quinceañera” is a traditional event in the Latin American tradition which celebrates a 15-year old’s entry into womanhood. The celebration is full of ceremony, inspiration, a reaffirmation of family values and fun – something we all can use! And it was an honor to be part of the family’s celebration of a stunning young lady’s ceremonial entry into a wider world. Here are a few of the photos from that event.
After the processional, Caitlin is given an inspirational message from her pastor as part of the more formal ceremony held in the church. Obviously her dress deserves to be the center of attention!
Caitlin was the center of attention in more ways than one
During the ceremony, Caitlin receives her tiara and scepter from her father and various other honors are paid to her by friends and family members. Below is her “court” including her escort and 10 other couples – friends and family. What a fine looking entourage!
Caitlin is truly a stunning young lady who is clearly “one with the dress.”
As we waited for her entrance into the reception, I captured Caitlin who was obviously considering the unfolding events of the day. I thought the image deserved some work to ensure that she became the center of attention in the frame.
Entry into the reception. I’m not certain of the purpose of the masks, as there are many different traditions at play. Regardless, I thought it added some fun and … mystery!
I couldn’t resist the tennis shoes.
One of the many traditions of the quinceanera is the “changing of the shoe”(from a slipper to a high heel) by the father that is one of the many symbols during the event that represent the transition into womanhood.
Also traditional is the father daughter dance. She is such a exquisite young lady and her father is obviously quite proud to be next to her.
After the father-daughter dance, tradition demands a formal waltz with her escort. They were very impressive in their style and charm.
Upon completion of the dance alone, the couple is joined by the entourage and all waltz together, carefully choreographed and ending as below. They all had obviously been working hard at rehearsing for this moment.
The birthday cake was, as expected, unlike any other I had seen with this unique topper.
And finally, friends and family gather round for a traditional singing of “Happy Birthday” followed by digging into that beautiful cake.
A truly inspiring and remarkable event with a poised and charming young woman at its center.
